The Board of Trustees of the Public Employees Retirement System of Mississippi (PERS) met this past Tuesday.  The Administrative Committee of the Board reported that while PERS staff had briefed committee members on the recent Attorney General’s opinion that concluded retired state employees should be able to draw their pension and serve in the Mississippi Legislature, the committee requested staff to gather additional information for the committee’s future consideration.  Thus, the Board of Trustees did not consider any regulatory changes at Tuesday’s meeting.  In requesting that the board act on the opinion during Tuesday’s meeting or in a special called meeting in the near future, Ann Thames, president of the Mississippi Retired Public Employees Association, cited the board’s next regularly scheduled meeting will not be held until February 26 which is only a few days before the March 1 qualifying deadline for legislative candidates.
