As we shared in late April, MDE miscalculated the amount of the teacher pay raise, which resulted in the legislature not appropriating enough funds to cover the cost of the pay raise for all eligible educators. MDE announced this past Monday that it has finalized the total amount of the pay raise. MDE missed 9,834 educators in its original calculation. This represents 24% of the total 40,991 eligible educators. MDE’s final calculation increases the cost of the pay raise by $18.5 million to $76.9 million. According to MDE, the agency will continue to work with legislative leaders to secure a deficit appropriation in January to fully fund the pay raise. Rep. Richard Bennett, Chairman of the House Education Committee, issued a statement late Monday afternoon expressing the legislature’s commitment to providing pay raises to all 40,991 educators.
