Given the upcoming November 5 General Election, our office has received several inquiries from members regarding their involvement in campaigns and/or their public expressions of support for their preferred candidate(s).  It is an educator’s individual right to advocate and participate in political activities as long as they do so outside of their school duties and hours.  Mississippi’s Attorney General has issued multiple opinions, including a 2015 opinion regarding educators’ public support for Initiative 42, that “school employees may voluntarily participate in political activities as long as their participation in such activities is limited to the hours when they are not involved in their work-related duties.” Click here for a description of activities educators may and may not engage in.
