Both the House and Senate have agreed to shorten the 125-day session by 7 days, so the deadlines for processing legislation have changed.  Critical deadlines now include the following:

  • February 17 - Deadline for introduction of general bills and constitutional amendments
  • March 3 - Deadline for committees to report general bills originating in own house
  • March 12 - Deadline for original floor action on general bills originating in own house
  • March 31 - Deadline for committees to report general bills originating in other house
  • April 8 - Deadline for original floor action on general bills originating in other house
  • April 23 - Deadline to concur or not concur in amendments from other house to general bills
  • April 25 - Deadline for conference reports on appropriation bills to be filed
  • April 27 - Deadline for adoption of appropriations conference reports and for conference reports on general bills to be filed
  • May 3 - Sine Die

Appropriation subcommittees in both the House and Senate met with various agencies regarding their FY 21 budget requests this week.  MDE presented its request to House Appropriations Subcommittee C yesterday morning.  MDE’s request includes additional funding for MSIS, the early learning collaboratives, the Literacy Based Promotion Act, detention centers, and the Achievement School District.  MDE has requested full funding of the MAEP formula.

Lt. Governor Hosemann is upholding his campaign promise to post Senate committee agendas 24 hours in advance on the Senate website.  Agendas are available via the new “Senate Committee Agenda” link under the “Calendars and Schedules” tab at the top of the legislative homepage (www.legislature.ms.gov).

Both chambers adjourned for the week earlier today.  Legislators will return to the capitol Monday.
