Legislative Update (7/24/20)

Governor Reeves has yet to call legislators back to Jackson for a special session to finalize an education budget for the current fiscal year which began July 1.  Districts were notified this past Tuesday that they will receive state funds by the end of the month in order to make July payroll, but they still do not have firm budget numbers for the year from MDE. This puts local administrators and districts in an even more challenging situation as they prepare to reopen schools in the coming days and weeks without a final budget.

Governor Reeves has referenced “If there is a special session….” in several of his briefings this week.  When asked yesterday if he might call a special session next week, he said that there is no chance of his doing so, as it would not be safe for legislators and that it wasn’t necessary, as “we can make MAEP transfers.” MPE is closely monitoring this situation and will keep our members updated as to developments.
