The University of Southern Mississippi’s World Class Teaching Program (USM WCTP) is offering three sections of this workshop. The virtual workshop is a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning about National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification.

 

Participants will choose from one of two windows of time to complete the virtual workshop. Each “window” or section includes two face-to-face Zoom sessions. In between the Zoom sessions, participants will work through the learning exercises in the Canvas course at their own pace. Participants will receive Canvas and Zoom links 48 hours before their section begins. The 2-day face-to-face workshop will be held ats the Rankin County School District.

 

  • Session 1 (virtual): June 8-15 with Zoom calls on the 8th and 15th from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
  • Session 2 (virtual): July 20-27 with Zoom calls on the 20th and 27th from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
  • Session 3: June 16 and 17 in-person session at the Rankin County School District Family Resource Center (200 School Road, Brandon, MS 39042) from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. each day

]]> Fri, 3 Oct 2025 17:09:00 GMT State Board Awards FY 2026 Funding to WCTPs https://www.mpe.org/news/news.asp?id=711702 https://www.mpe.org/news/news.asp?id=711702 The Mississippi Legislature appropriated $700,000 for Fiscal Year 2026 support of our state’s World Class Teaching Programs (WCTPs). This funding flows through the Mississippi Department of Education’s budget. Funds are awarded to each WCTP based on the percentage of total participants served during each fiscal year. The State Board of Education awarded the first half ($350,000) of this appropriation during its August 21, 2025, meeting:

 

  • Delta State University $9,813.08
  • Jackson State University $31,619.94
  • Mississippi State University $37,071.65
  • University of Mississippi $175,545.17
  • University of Southern Mississippi $95,950.16

 

The second half of the appropriation will also be awarded to each university on a prorated basis as confirmed by the National Board’s February counts.

All face-to-face meetings will be held in Owings McQuagge Hall on USM’s Hattiesburg campus.

 

USM’s WCTP is also offering face-to-face and online support groups for NBCTs who are maintaining their NBPTS certification. Maintenance of Certification (MOC) support groups are a combination of Zoom meetings and Canvas course support. The $200 registration fee is due by September 15, 2025. Mississippi’s 2021 Teacher of the Year, Leslie Tally, NBCT, will provide our keynote and share pivotal experiences in her teaching career, with a specific focus on fighting illiteracy by raising awareness for literacy-based deficits throughout our schools and educating not only students, but colleagues and community members on best practices to nurture growing readers. Peggy Brookins, NBCT, President and CEO of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), will provide a special welcome to participants.  Michelle Accardi, NBCT, Director of Policy and Partnerships for the NBPTS, will provide a National Board update.

 

The conference will also feature the following presentations:
