Colleges and universities across the United States utilize the ACT to measure the academic abilities of college-bound students in the areas of English, reading, mathematics, science, and writing. Students who meet the benchmarks for ACT College and Career Readiness possess the greatest potential for collegiate success. Accelerated performance on the ACT also provides students the opportunities to qualify for merit-based scholarships. The Mississippi Department of Education uses the ACT as part of the accountability model for determining the success level for school districts and high schools. In addition to the traditional ACT, the ACT WorkKeys offers solutions for students entering the workforce or a trade. This assessment measures skills that affect job performance. Students who demonstrate proficiency in the three assessed areas demonstrate their preparedness for the working world. Recent changes to the Mississippi Accountability Model include the incorporation of student performance on the ACT WorkKeys in the College and Career-Readiness component, and educators across the state are working to incorporate the standards and instruction for student and school success.
