Legislative Update: HB 957 Dies in the Senate

HB 957, the bill to eliminate the MAEP and create a new education funding formula, died in the Senate earlier this afternoon when a motion to recommit the bill to committee for additional work passed that chamber by a vote of 27-21. Recommitting a bill to committee effectively kills a bill for the remainder of a legislative session. Open the attached document to see today’s vote. A strike to the left of the senator’s name reflects that the senator voted to recommit the bill (i.e., kill it), while a strike to the right of the senator’s name reflects that the senator voted against recommitting the bill. As you can see, 27 senators listened to their constituents and voted to recommit the bill, thereby killing it.
