Governor Issues FY 2019 Budget Recommendation

Governor Bryant issued his Executive Budget Recommendation (EBR) for Fiscal Year 2019 (July 2018 – June 2019) this past Wednesday. Open the attached document to view the budget recommendation. Among other recommendations, the EBR: 1) decreases state spending by $32 million (0.5%) compared to the current FY 2018 budget; 2) provides level funding (i.e., the same amount as in the current fiscal year) for the MAEP, but cuts the General Education (MDE operations and support) budget by $10 million; 3) provides $13 million for education scholarship accounts for students. Governor Bryant stated in his recommendation that he will support a proposal in the upcoming legislative session to expand school choice; 4) provides level funding for the early learning collaboratives ($4 million), Mississippi’s World Class Teaching Programs ($480,000), and National Board Certification ($22.6 million); 5) proposes a new $7 million in funding for the Mississippi Works Scholarship Program which would offer free community college certifications in certain trades.
