The first bill has been filed in the Mississippi State Senate and it is a teacher pay raise bill.  SB 2001 increases the starting pay for new teachers (Years 1-3) by $1,110 to $37,000.  The bill provides a $1,000 increase via the salary schedule for all other teachers and increases the minimum salary of assistant teachers from $14,000 to $15,000.  Click here to review the bill as it was introduced by Senate Education Chairman Dennis DeBar with the support of Lt. Governor Hosemann.

SB 2001 is a starting point for discussions.  It has been referred to both Senate Education and Senate Appropriations.  It must pass both of these committees before being considered by the full Senate and then onto the House.  As with any piece of legislation, you may share your thoughts on SB 2001 with your state senator.
