The Senate Education Committee met Wednesday, November 6, 2024. State Superintendent of Education Dr. Lance Evans and MDE staff briefed the committee on several issues. MDE staff reported that, in general, the new education funding formula is working well, especially given that it is based on enrollment rather than average daily attendance. Staff shared several concerns raised by districts, including maintenance of effort challenges and the need to increase gifted education funding. Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) staff shared information regarding the region’s teacher workforce. The meeting concluded with legislative staff presenting a summary of the Mental Health Task Force's recommendations.
