The President signed an executive order late yesterday afternoon, March 20, directing the Secretary of Education to close the Department of Education and return education authority to the states. The President cannot dissolve the Cabinet-level agency, as that would require an act of Congress, and he acknowledges he does not have the votes to do so. During a press event to accompany the signing of the executive order, he indicated some functions would be redistributed to other agencies. MPE will provide additional information on this action and its potential impact on our state as that information becomes available.
