2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results released Wednesday, January 29, 2025, reflect the tireless work of Mississippi educators, students and parents. It was simply an incredible day for public education in Mississippi. Click here to read MDE’s media advisory announcing our state’s results, including:
Highest-ever rate of students scoring proficient or advanced in all four tests (4th and 8th reading and math)
9th in the nation in 4th grade reading
African American 4th graders rank 3rd among their peers nationally for reading and math
Hispanic 4th graders rank 1st among their peers nationally for reading and 2nd for math.
Economically disadvantaged 4th graders rank 1st in the nation among their peers in reading and 2nd for math.
The good news continued Wednesday as the Urban Institute announced that when these NAEP scores are adjusted for student demographics (i.e., poverty), Mississippi ranks 1st in the nation for 4th grade reading and math, 1st for 8th grade math, and 4th for 8th grade reading. Visit MPE’s Facebook page for videos of comments made in the House Education Committee meeting Wednesday afternoon following the release of the NAEP scores.
These scores are the result of hard work and educators’ commitment to our students and the future of our state. We still have work to do, but congratulations on these incredible NAEP scores.
