The Mississippi State Board of Education held its monthly meeting Thursday, March 20. Among its agenda items, the Board:
Received the State Superintendent’s monthly report. Dr. Lance Evans shared that, as it relates to the uncertainty of education policy and operations at the federal level, MDE programming will not change, and the department will continue to provide support and technical assistance to Mississippi districts and educators. He also shared that Dr. Donna Boone, MDE Chief Academic Officer since March 2023, is retiring. Dr. Boone has been a member of MPE since 2011 and we wish her all the best in her retirement!
Approved Meridian High School, Richland High School and Pontotoc High School as Schools of Innovation beginning in the 2025-2026 school year. The Board also renewed George County High School as a School of Innovation and renewed Tupelo School District and Oxford School District as Districts of Innovation.
Approved Corrective Action Plans (CAPs) for 14 districts assigned a Probation or Withdrawn accreditation status.
Readopted the 2016 Mississippi College- and Career-Readiness Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics.
Approved a temporary rule and began the Administrative Procedures Act (APA) process to revise State Board Policy Chapter 24, Rule 24.1 – Contracts, Teachers to replace “Adequate Education” with “Student Funding Formula” in the contract template.
Accepted a subcommittee’s recommendation to accept Mississippi State University’s proposal to relocate the Mississippi School for Math and Science (MSMS) to the Mississippi State campus beginning in the 2026-27 school year. MSMS has been located on the campus of the Mississippi University for Women since its inception in 1987. The subcommittee evaluated proposals from both universities. The Board’s recommendation will now go to the legislature for consideration, as no changes to MSMS will occur without legislative action and funding.
