A measure that would direct public funds to private and religious schools passed a committee in the U.S. House of Representatives this past Wednesday. The House Committee on Ways and Means approved a measure in the budget reconciliation package that would allow the federal government to spend $5 billion per year for four years on nonpublic schools. This voucher program worth $20 billion over four years would be funded via tax credits. Donors to Scholarship Granting Organizations (nonprofits that grant scholarships to private and religious schools) will receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit in exchange for their donation. Such tax credits reduce revenue to support critical public services, including public education. Of course, private and religious schools choose which students they will accept while public schools must accept all students.
