Governor Reeves released his Fiscal Year 2027 Executive Budget Recommendation (EBR) on November 14, 2025. The EBR does not recommend an increase in funding for K-12 education except for an additional $2,087,231 for the Chickasaw Interest. Governor Reeves recommends the following education policies:

  • Eliminating restrictions on public school transfers when a receiving district has the capacity to serve a student.
  • Ensuring that tuition does not deter students from attending a school of their choice (i.e., vouchers).
  • Removing “bureaucratic barriers” that have deterred charter schools from opening and flourishing in our state. While the EBR states that charter schools “play a critical role in providing high-quality education to students,” all but one of the state’s seven charter schools that received grades for 2024-25 were rated D or F.

The EBR does not recommend an increase in funding for our state’s community and junior colleges or institutions of higher learning in FY 2027.

The Joint Legislative Budget Committee (JLBC) is scheduled to meet Wednesday, December 10, to adopt its FY 2027 Legislative Budget Recommendation (LBR). The LBR carries a great deal more weight and significance than the EBR, as it drives the development of the state budget.
